DAKINS SOLUTION ----------------------------------------------- They looked at concentrations of Dakins(.25%, .025%, and .0125%) for toxicity and bactericidal efffect. Concentrations of .25% killed both healthy cells and bacteria, but only bacteria at .025%. Dakins at .0125% was ineffectivefor killing bacteria. They concluded that modified Dakins(.025%) was the better choice. Ed Zabawski. DO --------------- A word to the wise: when you write for Dakin's 0.25% make sure to write it as "1/4%". In this way the pharmacist won't move the decimal point, and make up a 2.5 or (shudder) a 25% solution! Robert I. Rudolph, M.D., FACP ----------------------------- This actually happened to a patient of mine who was prescribed 0.25% phenol in lac hydrin (for itch) and got 25% phenol. Her 85 y/o legs were peeled/burned severely. Everything came out ok, though. She healed in about 2 weeks and has nicer looking skin below the knee than she did before. The pharmacy denied doing it of course. Guy Webster ----------- Dakins is a proprietary product( Century Pharmaceuticals) of buffered .25% or .5% sodium hypochlorite(NaClO) solution.
