CIPRO - DRUG REACTION ------------------------------------------------ Wanted you to know about a really impressive reaction I saw recently. The patient, who is allergic to sulfa, usually carries macrodantin with her when she travels in case she gets a UTI. She recently found herself in Rome with a UTI, but without her macrodantin. She went to a Roman hospital, where she was given Cipro. After a week on the drug, she developed an eruption beginning on the feet and ankles, later spreading up as high as the axillae. She stopped the drug, and the rash now (two weeks later) is resolving in the opposite (caudad) direction. Clinically, the eruption was a florid macular pigmented purpura (capillaritis).
