Dermatoscopy, which is successfully used for the examination of skin pigmentary lesions, has recently been utilized for evaluation of nail pigmentation.

This non invasive technique can be an important tool in discriminating nail pigmentary lesions that require a biopsy from those that are undoubtedly benign.

Onychomycosis due to nondermathophytic moulds is becoming more common worldwide. In our experience moulds account for about 15% of cases of onychomycosis. Onychomycosis due to Scopulariopsis brevicaulis, Fusarium sp. and Aspergillus sp. may often be suspected by clinical examination, since they most commonly cause a proximal subungual onychomycosis associated with inflammation of the proximal nail fold. In our experience mould onychomycosis is not significantly associated with systemic diseases or immunodepression.
